Custom High-Performance Woodworking

About Dan

I am passionate about building in a way that reduces our carbon footprint. I became a Phius Certified Builder (CPHB) in 2016. Since then, I have designed and fabricated dozens of Phius-Certified passive house doors and windows for projects throughout North America.

The built environment has a significant impact on energy usage, so how we manage our buildings impacts our ability to affect climate change. I believe in preserving historic structures while improving their thermal envelope and aesthetics. When it comes to new construction, I incorporate modern building science and the latest technology in building components.

I started as a carpenter in 1999 in Missoula, Montana after receiving a BA in Environmental Studies. Over the past 20+ years, I have worked as a carpenter in Montana, Oregon, New York, Australia, New Zealand, and at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. In 2004, I joined the renowned Hammer and Hand firm, a nationally recognized high-performance building leader based in Portland and Seattle. I managed the woodshop at Hammer and Hand from its inception in 2007 to 2021 and helped grow it from a one-person shop to a thriving multi-carpenter custom woodshop that supplies high-end custom wood products throughout the US and Canada.

I live and run my woodshop in Trumansburg, just outside of Ithaca, NY, on a historic property. When not building in my shop or rehabbing our early-1800s farmhouse, I can be found spending time with my family and dog, Cedar, on our beautiful property or on our flower farm, Jenny Creek Flowers.
